'The Valleys' unfolds like a sonic landscape... one that is characterized by mountains, hills, waters, gorges, but most of all.. vast valleys.
For this piece, relatively static electronic sounds such as radio interference waves were integrated with recorded/acoustic sounds. After several stages of processing this resulted in interesting and rich sonic textures. Throughout the piece, sonic textures like these melt into one another in multiple layers, sometimes creating an almost impenetrable wall of sound. In contrast to that, several fast moving, short and subtle sound snippets are thrown in that contribute to the suggestive power of some passages, hiding in bigger streams of sound in which they are masked.
'The Valleys' consists of three parts. The middle part of the piece is a very slow and subtle movement that is like a large valley between two mountain ranges.
The piece was composed in 1997 in the studios of the Institute of Sonology in The Hague.
