‘Ngakau Mohio’ (Maori for ‘understanding’) is a contraction of two earlier pieces, ‘Oorsprong’ (Dutch for ‘origin’) and ‘Opaal’ (Dutch for ‘opal’), that were both commissioned by the Dutch fund ‘NFPK+’. In the process, ‘Ngakau Mohio’ has become a shorter, denser and more transformative piece, characterised by multi-layered textures and complex filtering of cross-synthesized soundmaterials that were derived from a wide variety of sources.
'Ngakau Mohio' strives to combine the best of both pieces. A complex interaction of swirling ‘sonic entities’ expresses an abstact tale of remoteness and closeness, safety and danger, fear and wonder, contradictions, primal forces and moving colors. In search for an understanding of the great unknown...
